Forrester Research's Charlene Li puts paid search spending at roughly $1.7 billion in 2003, growing about 40% to $2.4 billion this year, and predicts growth will taper off into the middle or low teens in 2007 and 2008.
Yet only 26% of all searchers ever click on a paid ad. In the same way that an article in a newspaper has more weight with the reader than an ad does, so do organic search results have more influence than paid search. And the cost of buying keywords is rising as the competition increases.
